The Ergoflex 5G mattress boasts a 5-layer sleep system made with premium materials. It’s a less-common choice of mattress in the UK, and frankly it’s possible you might not have heard of Ergoflex before. Long-term reviews are highly positive, they were after all the original purveyor of the mattress-in-a-box format: way before Simba, Emma and the rest, there was Ergoflex.

Ergoflex are actually an Australian company but have been selling their mattresses in the UK for over 10 years now. So, is the Ergoflex 5G really the esteemed choice and is it worth buying? Let’s find out.

Overview: Ergoflex 5G mattress

Sick of reading mattress review sites that don’t provide you with the negatives – only the positives? Me too! I created WhatMattress to be honest and give you the full, unbiased picture – all warts and all, if you like 🙂

For this review, I spent several weeks actually sleeping on the Ergoflex 5G memory foam mattress, and my overall thoughts are that it’s a great option for anyone looking for a supportive, yet plush mattress.

There is some early off-gassing, and some people who prefer a softer mattress may not like the feel of this one. The Ergoflex 5G has several drawbacks, but its high-density foam, supportive form, and special features make it a mattressto think about. Particularly if you’re the sort of person who wants to avoid all the marketing hype of its big-spend brethren like Simba or Emma Sleep.

Pros

  • Long-established company
  • Good/great long-term reviews
  • Available in lots of sizes
  • 10-year warranty
  • Hypoallergenic and free of harmful chemicals
  • Great for those with back issues

Cons

  • 30 night trial isn’t much; 100-200 nights would be preferable
  • Not as cheap as some other brands
  • Not made in the UK

The Ergoflex 5G: What is it?

Just so you know, “5G” actually has nothing to do with your phone being 5G. In this case, it actually means 5th Generation – because that’s the current ‘generation’ or ‘series’ of the mattress. They’ve basically had 4 previous designs, and now we’re on the 5th.

The Ergoflex 5G is a 5-layer memory foam mattress, with a specially-engineered Cool-Sleep airflow layer at its core to help regulate temperature.

Clearly, it has been designed to provide supportive body-shaping performance and “zero” partner disturbance. Additionally, the 5G is inherently anti-microbial, resistant to dust mites and allergens, and is certified to Certi-Pur & OEKO-TEX 100 standards.

While the mattress is suitable for a variety of sleepers, I’d say it’s particularly recommended for those who suffer from back pain, circulation problems, or joint complaints.

About the Ergoflex mattress trial:

So, 30 nights might not be as long as other companies such as Simba who offer a 200-night trial. Should you be worried?

Yes and no.

Firstly, 30 nights should be sufficient for you to get to know the mattress, and decide if it’s for you and your partner, or not. The Sleep Council recommends slightly longer mattress trials if possible, such as up to 100 days, to get the fuller picture. So if you are concerned about that then I suggest perhaps another brand. But quite honestly for most people, it won’t matter.

One positive of this shorter trial period though: the reviews are likely to be more accurate, when compared to other brands with longer periods. Why? Because generally speaking, the longer the trial goes on, the less likely people are to review the product they’ve bought. It makes sense to say  most people will be reviewing the product early on, often only 1-2 days after the product arrives. These reviews will be more accurate – good or bad.

And looking further at the reviews of Ergoflex on places like Trustpilot we can see that they are pretty well-received by most – on Trustpilot they are rated 4.7 / 5.

What about the 5G’s layers?

The five distinct layers that make up the Ergoflex 5G mattress combine to make for a restful night’s sleep.

  1. The TENCEL ventilated outer cover is a natural breathable and moisture-wicking material that aids in temperature regulation as you sleep on the Ergoflex 5G mattress. There are openings in the cover that let air circulate and keep the mattress from being too hot to sleep on. You can clean it easily in the washing machine by setting the temperature to 30 degrees.
  2. There is an additional layer of protection for the mattress beneath the outer layer. This cover prevents dust, grime, and other debris from penetrating the mattress by acting as a barrier between the top layer and the layers underneath.
  3. This next layer is made from visco-elastic foam or  what is known as simply “memory foam”. A lot of brands nowadays will invent weird and wonderful names for what is essentially mattress-type memory foam. It’s nice to see Ergoflex not going too far down this route and keeping things simple. As for what their so-called ACPT foam is, this memory foam is designed with billions of spherical shaped open cells with orthopaedic pressure-reducing properties.
  4. A layer of cool-sleep airflow foam, about 5cm in thickness, lies beneath the memory foam. By controlling heat and increasing ventilation, this layer works to keep you comfortable throughout the night.
  5. This layer is often overlooked, as it’s the final base layer at the very bottom that sits on your mattress slats. Not very exciting! But it’s actually quite important because it’s holding up the mattress itself, and the sleeper’s body. If there’s too much compression here you’ll sink very far down, so the high-density base has to be quite firm. And the flip-side (no pun intended) of that, is you probably can’t flip the mattress over and sleep on the inverse side … it’d just be too firm. This is another drawback of some memory foams, not just Ergoflex mattresses but nearly all of them.

Interestingly, Ergoflex pitch their mattresses against the pricey Tempur brand, and yet they are a third of the price of Tempur mattresses.

As you can see, Tempur mattresses are around 2cm less deep than the equivalent Ergoflex brand, and yet they are three times the price of the equivalent Ergoflex mattress!

Firmness

Because it’s quite a firm mattress, I’m going to give it a 7.5 out of 10 rating on the WhatMattress firmness scale.

On this scale, with 1 being extremely soft and 10 being extremely firm, this indicates that the mattress is on the firmer side of medium-firm, which may be ideal for those who prefer a firmer sleeping surface.

Cover: In review

The two-layer cover system on the Ergoflex 5G mattress is quite a rare find in the mattress world.

It’s been designed to keep you dry but also comfortable. A thin white polyester fabric serves as the inside cover, enclosing all three layers of foam. Between the foam and the mattress cover lies this protective barrier that keeps out dust, debris, and moisture.

Covered with a comfortable, breathable TENCEL fabric that is hypoallergenic and wicks away moisture naturally. A quilted 25mm foam layer provides extra padding and comfort for this cover. It’s soft and smooth like silk, and honestly it looks and feels expensive.

One of the best things about this cover is that it’s removable and machine washable, which is especially useful if you suffer from allergies or want to keep your mattress as clean as possible. The cover can be washed at 30°C, so it’s easy to keep fresh and clean.

The Ergoflex 5G mattress cover is exceptionally plush, smooth, and soft and one of its best features; it allows air to circulate and removes excess moisture, it keeps you cool but dry. It’s a useful addition to the mattress, and the fact that it can be removed and washed makes it much more so.

Is it an Orthopaedic mattress?

I’ll be honest and say I’ve never heard of The Back Doctor before, who features heavily on the Ergoflex website.

Regardless, the Ergoflex 5G’s orthopaedic characteristics mean it probably can be considered an ‘orthopaedic mattress’. Why? Because it can help support the spine and reduce the discomfort associated with back pain; the high-density memory foam in its multilayered construction moulds to the body to relieve pressure and encourages a generally “healthy” posture.

Dr Mark Craig, also known as the “Back Doctor,” suggests using the Ergoflex 5G as one component of a comprehensive approach to relieving back and neck discomfort. He found that his professional reading and his own personal investigation both pointed him towards the Ergoflex mattress.

So what does this all mean? In short, Ergoflex have gone to great lengths to make their mattress suited to those with back pain. Nowadays every mattress manufacturer claims to be ‘supportive’ or ‘medium-firm’ but frankly they don’t mean much.

But because of its multi-layered design and supportive memory foam, the Ergoflex 5G is a great option for anyone who experiences back pain or require more support when sleeping. The mattress aids in spinal alignment and reduces pressure spots to ensure a relaxing and rejuvenating night’s sleep.

What about lower back pain?

The 5G’s multi-layered memory foam construction conforms to the body, distributing weight evenly and offering support for the spine. As a result, it’s likely going to be a good option for those with lower back pain as the foam can help alleviate pressure on the lumbar region.

However, for those with upper back pain, it may not be the best choice as the foam may not provide the necessary support for the thoracic region.

As ever, I am not a medical professional, so please consult one if in doubt.

Is it hyopallergenic?

Yes.

Because of its construction, Ergoflex mattresses are hypoallergenic and less likely to provoke allergic reactions. Because they use OEKO-TEX 100 certified foam, which is free from dangerous chemicals, and the Ultra-Fresh antimicrobial treatment, these products are less likely to produce an allergic reaction.

Those with asthma or allergies may benefit the most from this, though everyone’s sensitivity levels are different and your mileage may vary.

Our Methodology

To test the Ergoflex 5G with an accelerometer while sleeping, I first attached the device to the base of the mattress to record any vibrations caused by the subject’s movements. The accelerometer was calibrated to record at a high sample rate, which allowed for precise recording of all motion.

The next step was to evaluate the mattress’ motion transmission by… sleeping with my partner! He rolls around a lot. In order to mimic natural sleeping behaviour, I didn’t even need to ask him to change anything, as he rolls around all night. The accelerometer measured the tremors caused by his shifting positions in the bed.

During the sleep trial, I found that the Ergoflex 5G showed minimal motion transfer, with an average peak-to-peak acceleration of 0.05g – or in other words the vibrations produced by mine and my sleeping partner’s movements on the mattress surface were effectively absorbed and isolated, resulting in minimal disturbance. I didn’t notice it at all, and I suspect this is because of the heavy base in particular.

Where are Ergoflex mattresses made?

If you’re worried about buying Chinese goods at the moment, then don’t worry – Ergoflex mattresses are “made in the EU”.

To be honest, I am not sure where exactly and am waiting on Ergoflex to clarify – some people have suggested Romania, but this could be here in the UK. Some mattresses are made in the UK, normally in the same factory. If anyone has any information on where Ergoflex are made please leave a comment!

What are the drawbacks of the Ergoflex 5G?

The main negatives come from the mattress type itself and not the ERGOFLEX™ brand: i.e. from the memory foam.

If you’re not familiar with the drawbacks of memory foam, then let me clarify: the main issue is from those who are hot sleepers, i.e. who “get hot” easily in the night. As the human body sinks into the mattress foam, it will gather heat.

Of course, many manufacturers claim that they have various “cooling” mechanisms within the foam/material/fabric cover… but it is rare for these to ever be submitted for scientific testing.

I would exercise caution here; what IS well-known is hot sleepers generally benefit from latex or other ‘natural’ fibres rather than man-made ones. The sad news is these types of mattresses tend to cost a lot more. If your budget allows, you may want to investigate John Ryan By Design who have some advice here.  The other alternative is to try a pocket spring mattress, which tend to be more naturally cooling.

The other negative is the 30 night trial, it’d be better for Ergoflex to increase this I feel. The trial period covers you in the short run but are you insured in the long run? Kind of. Every Ergoflex Memory Foam Mattress comes with a 10-year manufacturers warranty. This covers material or workmanship defects arising in that period, but be aware of the usual drawbacks to warranties before basing your purchasing decision on this alone.

History of Ergoflex

Ergoflex is an Australian mattress company founded in 2006, with its headquarters now apparently located in the United Kingdom. The company was established with the philosophy of creating a mattress that is comparable to the high-end Tempur brand but at a more affordable price point.

2006 may not sound that long ago, but it is a good few years before Emma, Simba, Nectar and many others. So they’ve been around a long time.

Other mattresses to consider

Interestingly Ergoflex suggest that this is a good mattress for fibromyalgia sufferers, but I note that there isn’t really enough pressure relief with this mattress. Based on my understanding of fibromyalgia, I would say that these are better:

  • Nectar Memory Foam Mattress: This memory foam mattress has a medium-firm feel that can provide pressure point relief for back and side sleepers.
  • The Simba Hybrid Pro Mattress includes a patented spring system and foam layers designed to provide decent pressure relief. It has received numerous awards for its design and comfort, including a Which? Best Buy award.

What about Tempur?

  1. Both Ergoflex and Tempur both use high-quality materials in their construction, and they both have multiple layers of comfort and support. The Ergoflex mattress has a Tencel cover, a protective inner cover, a viscoelastic memory foam layer, the Ergoflex Cool-Sleep airflow system, and a high-resilience foam base. A QuickRefresh Tempur mattress cover, a Tempur comfort material layer, a Tempur support material layer, a Durabase Technology layer, and a Durabase Technology layer make up the various layers of the Tempur mattress. The number of layers and the materials utilised determine the distinction between the two.
  2. Ergoflex 5G mattresses are considered “medium to firm,” while Tempur mattresses are nearly all considered “medium” in terms of comfort. Those who prefer or want a firmer mattress may find more satisfaction with the Ergoflex than the Tempur.
  3. The trial term for the Ergoflex is 30 nights, whereas that for the Tempur its 100 nights.
  4. When compared to the Tempur, the Ergoflex is a lot cheaper. Mattresses like the Tempur Original Elite begin at £1,249, while the Ergoflex 5G begins at £385.

Verdict: Is the Ergoflex 5G worth it?

In conclusion, the Ergoflex 5G is a solid choice for those in the market for a mattress that’s a bit different to the norm.

Its high quality and longer-lasting nature shine through and this is obvious from all of the longer-term reviews and repeat-buysers. Its unique combination of memory foam and cooling technology will likely give a comfortable and supportive sleep experience for the vast majority of sleepers.

If you, or your partner and your combined weight, is over 21 stone, then you may want to look at pocket springs or hybrid mattresses instead – though in all honesty, the 5G mattress is okay for heavier people when compared to many other memory foams I’ve tested.

(The reason I recommend a hybrid is because they tend to hold a bit more weight for larger framed people. The average UK couple now weigh about 20 stone, so this is a bit under, but worth taking into account.)

The Ergoflex 5G mattress is also slightly thinner than other mattress brands. Okay, so it’s only 23cm versus 25cm (eg: Emma Original mattress), but that tiny 2cm difference may be worth noting closely because your fitted sheets may not fit perfectly. The ‘standard’ UK mattress thickness is 25cm for comparison.

But neither of these points matter particularly if you’re happy with the price and the firmness. Luckily, Ergoflex do sometimes do a discount code – this makes them comparable on price with leading “premium” brands like Brook + Wilde.

It’s just a shame they don’t do longer than a 30 day trial. If you can live with that, then give them a try. After all, a month is probably long enough to decide if any mattress is right for you or not.
